GLASS SLIPPERS AND WALKING STICKS

A Fairytale Rewrite After A Stroke

The Book

Glass Slippers and Walking Sticks came about one afternoon when I was in the middle of brainstorming my book, and I realised how I could relate my stroke to a fairytale.

For me, a fairytale is when a character is living an ordinary, everyday life and suddenly there's a drastic change that happens, yet you end up with a "perfect" life.  This is a fairytale rewrite: everything goes off course, but you can still be happy living differently from how you expected.

I hope that the book or this website can help someone beginning life after a stroke.

About Me

Tara looking out a window in a bar in Nashville on holiday

I’m Tara, the author of Glass Slippers and Walking Sticks. When I arrived at rehab, I wanted a conversation with someone who understood, someone who could give me an idea of what my life might now look like. I wanted to make sense of what had happened. I’m not good with the unknown.

The book and this website are the conversation I wanted. I hope they can help other stroke survivors, family members and medical professionals.

What Helps

Recovery isn't just about learning to walk and talk.  There are other bits: dealing with fatigue, rebuilding your confidence, finding new ways to do things and all the stuff people don't think of.

Travel

Travelling after a stroke has its own challenges.  Here's what I've learned about trains, planes, assistance and getting away again.

Blog

Life after a stroke is rarely straightforward.

This blog has the latest parts of my story: recovery, travel, things that work, and those that don't!
