Days Out and Pacing

Days out on holiday are way more exhausting than they used to be. I've never been one to sit still if I've gone somewhere. I'll have a pre-planned list of what I want to do and usually find extra things when we’re there.

Being on your feet all day, be it walking or standing, can prove surprisingly tricky. When we went to New Orleans, I’d booked a cemetery tour for us to do. I’m a self-confessed weirdo, but this is actually a tourist attraction! It wasn’t a horrendously long distance, but there was a lot of standing around in hot weather. Between being incredibly hot and sweaty and having aching calves, I knew about it later. The next day we did the open-top bus tour to save my energy.

On the same holiday, we also went to Memphis. As a die-hard Elvis fan, this meant ticking off a bucket list moment with a visit to Graceland. Looking back, I was kind of (embarrassingly) like a kid at Christmas. I didn’t take the sunny weather or the fact that we had the entire day into account, and ended up being the same sweaty mess this time, with a headache. It was only when John pointed out the time that I reluctantly agreed to go to the cafe for lunch and a break.

One afternoon we had to tick off another of my activities, and we went to a little corner of New Orleans that Bond fans might recognise.

I’ve had to learn when to stop. Sightseeing isn’t the same as before. Some days I can do more than others. A holiday isn’t a rush to do everything straight away.

Doing things differently doesn’t mean enjoying them less.
